Pakenham Auto Club

Body:

In February 1972 Steve Cornwall and John Carney were working together when the idea of forming a car club came up.
John explained, 'we went over to Mike Frawley's garage on our tea break and discussed the idea with him. Steve was in favour of a social/hotrod type club whereas I wanted a club where I could drive as fast as I could. Mike's mechanic, John Street, then offered us the use of his home for our first meeting. Funny thing was, John Street was the only person at that first meeting that didn't join'.
After becoming affiliated with CAMS, the newly formed Pakenham Car Club held its first meeting in June 1972 at the Pakenham South Hall. Steve Cornwall was elected president with John Carney as the secretary
Its first event was a social day/car show at Walhalla followed by a treasure hunt to raise money for the Pakenham Hospital.
